Preliminary exercise

1) State the song you have chosen for your preliminary exercise.

2) Choose at least three music videos similar to your concept and watch a clip or more from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene.

-Through The Rain- Mariah Carey: The music video's colour scheme is grey and dull, which I will be using in my own music video to create a sad and empty feeling as that is what the point of my music video is. There are many closeups in the video to show the emotions on the actors and singers face. Toward the end the colour scheme of grey changes to a brighter one the show how far they have come the the pure happiness they feel.

-Someone like you- Adele: The setting in the music video is always empty to create a meaning that she feels alone in the world with no one to comfort her. There is a variety of different type of shots to create different meanings.

-Bad Guy-Billie Eilish:- The video has a combination of narrative and performance ,while showing Billie's character telling a story through the visuals.-Intertextuality- Andrew Goodwin shows us that music videos reference other texts and elements, which is exactly what the music video does because it includes playful nodes to pop culture icons and tropes, allowing views to recognise this.

3) Write a short music video treatment for your extract (this is basically a script for your music video). You can find an example of a treatment here. If you are making your real coursework then feel free to use the treatment from your summer project.

-Three shots, long shot, medium and close up shots.

-Scene 1: Long shot of my actress walking on a road after work, wearing professional clothes and her expression shows she is tired and drained. As she is walking along the road she will be looking down the entire time to create a feeling of emptiness and this shot will be a long shot which will transition into a close up of her face to emphasis her emotions.

-Scene 2: She will come to her house after scene 1 and open her door and go straight upstairs to her bedroom where she will get her first flashback and will remember her being in her child hood and being happy and energetic. Her costume will include of comfy wear like joggers, jeans and sweaters.

-Scene 3: Her younger self will be writing in her diary and laughing and also being doing her makeup after. There will be close-ups and medium shots in these scenes, to show the depth of her emotions.

4) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing (in a music video you will find you need FAR more shots than you think, particularly close-ups). These additional shots can be close-ups, alternative angles or something more creative. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word/Google Docs to set out your shot list - you can find an example here (this is from narrative filmmaking but the same format can be used for any video project).

Scene 2:

-Wide shot of the house and my artist walking in.

-Medium shot of my artist's hands in pocket.

-Wide shot of my artist going up her stairs

-Close up on my artist's face.

5) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre and style of your artist? Plan your settings, costume, make-up, props and lighting.

-Dark colours and soft lighting creates a melancholy atmosphere that also goes along with the themes of nostalgia. The setting is always either an empty building or street, which mirrors the feeling of loneliness and longing. The colour schemes in the song shows a sense of sadness and nostalgia.

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required, planned equipment and any other aspects you need to arrange.

-When-Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th of October.
-Where-On road, in house and bedroom and park.
-Who is required-My friend who will be playing the main actress and artist.
-Planned equipment-Use a Canon SLR.
